The Calico Horse Story

Welcome back to the new and improved Calico Horse website!

My hands are most comfortable surrounded with folds of fabric so it was through trial and error that we're up and running on the web again! I feel confident that we've found a great host and our site will now offer the most up to date information about our shop, our class schedule and fabric, kits, and inspiration. My goal is for thecalicohorse.com to be a place you'll enjoy visiting frequently with a cup of coffee if you're like Leslie, Wendy, our two Linda's who we affectionately refer to as "L1 and L2", and Debbie or a tall iced tea with plenty of ice if you're like me, Cheryl and Susan.

Owning my own quilt shop is a dream I realized about 3 years ago.  My love of quilting came from my grandma and I am proud to carry on her legacy.  Many of her quilts have places of honor in my home and my middle son Bobby is convinced there is something special about him as he is the only one of my three kids to receive a baby quilt from grandma.  Truth be told, I have three wonderful kids and I think Bobby received the quilt because grandma found special baby fabric at TG&Y around the time he was born.  I think we all remember TG&Y, boy has fabric come a long way!  I'm just glad that the art of quilting is alive and well and my youngest, Michelle has become a fantastic quilter and I'm thrilled to see the next generation taking up the art.  My oldest is Brian and he was the first of my kids to receive a wedding quilt in December when he married Joeleen, a wonderful young lady that we were happy to welcome into our family!

The Calico Horse was the first place I found when moving to this area when my kids were in elementary school.  I was truly at home when I knew a quilt shop was close by!  First, I was a customer, took some classes, and eventually worked part time.  My paycheck came and went to the same place!  I saw the need and had the desire so I purchased a long arm quilting machine and quilted from my home for several years.   The opportunity to purchase The Calico Horse came under unfortunate circumstances, the death of the previous owner, Deb Grantz.  Deb was a talented and loved member of the quilting world and was my friend.  I always had the greatest respect for Deb's taste in fabric and quilts and her impeccable piecing and having owned the shop for several years I have a newfound respect for her as a businesswoman.   I think we have honored our friend by the continued success of The Calico Horse.

Our motto at The Calico Horse is that it is a place "Where Quilts and Friendships are Made".  My goal is for you to visit our store and be surrounded by the latest bolts of beautiful fabric and inspired by the quilts we have made and displayed.  On any given day you will be able to find a great selection of the beloved Moda, yards and yards of Civil War Reproduction, charming 30's, and everything in between.  I am always drawn to red, white, and blue and look for the softest flannels.  I am thrilled to have a new younger generation of quilters joining our classes so we're stocking some fabrics that are appealing to them... and me!  I have a wonderful staff, each brings a special talent to the shop and on any given day you will find someone friendly and knowledgeable.   We have "two sisters" that work behind the scenes and are forever creating fabulous quilts.  Together we make a great team to help you in all of your quilting endeavors.  Our shop is a place where people find comfort and inspiration and it's heartwarming to hear someone say "I just came in for inspiration."  I hope you will visit our site and shop frequently!
